For many reasons, children, young people and adults may find it extremely hard to engage in therapy, or not want to, and yet continue to experience a number of emotional and behavioural difficulties- this can be particularly common with children and adolescents, and can cause high levels of concern and desperation for families and schools.
Although we are very mindful of this, and will do what we can to provide reassurance and clarity about the help we can offer; If the individual ultimately decides not to have therapy then we respect this decision.
In such cases, it may be very helpful to work with the wider system around the individual e.g. parents/carers, schools, social care etc where worries and frustrations may be felt around what to do for the best. Providing advice and guidance within a psychotherapeutic framework can be extremely effective, and serve to strengthen the support around the individual.
This is called consultation.
